Park Regis Kris Kin Hotel Dubai Shows Solidarity Towards Children with Down Syndrome
The Park Regis Kris Kin Hotel Dubai team came out in full strength to participate in the Down Syndrome Awareness Walk, held on March 21 at Zabeel Park, Dubai.
The Park Regis Kris Kin Hotel Dubai team came out in full strength to participate in the Down Syndrome Awareness Walk, held on March 21 at Zabeel Park, Dubai. The march was organized to commemorate the World Down Syndrome Day, a day recognised each year by the United Nations to raise awareness about the genetic disease.
Down Syndrome is one of the most common genetic birth defects. It causes delays in physical and intellectual development resulting in some degree of learning disability. They may also face difficulties in handling strong emotions and feelings that may lead to depression.
Usually, children born with the condition also have other health problems. The potential problems include heart defects, intestinal problems, hearing or vision problems, increased risk for leukemia or thyroid problems, celiac disease. They also have increased risk of minor health problems, such as colds, ear infections, and bronchitis.
Mr. Scott Butcher, General Manager, Park Regis Kris Kin Hotel Dubai, said that the Down Syndrome Awareness Walk was an ideal opportunity to remind expectant mothers with a family history of this genetic disease not to forego Down syndrome screening, and to acquaint themselves with basic facts about it.
“With advancements in medical technology, people with Down syndrome are now living much longer than in the past. The awareness walk reminded everyone with a family history of this disease to go for specialised tests to help them better understand the risk,” he said.
Various activities held as part of the walk also made the participants aware that most people who have Down syndrome can flourish and live healthy, happy, and productive lives.
Mr. Butcher added, “Parents who have a child with Down Syndrome may face difficulties adjusting to the reality. The walk provided them an opportunity to discuss their fears with close friends and family, besides consulting the experts. With little guidance from them and self-confidence, parenting a child with Down Syndrome can be as joyful and demanding as raising and nurturing any other child.”
The walk also spread awareness about social responsibility towards children and teenagers with Down Syndrome who may face social difficulties and vulnerabilities like abuse, injury, and other types of harm.
