Al Shindagha Museum Winter Camp: Adventures exploring Tales of the Sea
Dubai Culture and Arts Authority) Dubai Culture(is offering children a rich edutainment adventure through its Al Shindagha Museum Winter Camp, taking place over two weeks, with the first from December 18 to 22 and the second from December 25 to 29. The camp, themed ‘Explore the Tales of the Sea’, provides children aged between 8 and 12 with the opportunity to learn about Emirati heritage and explore marine environments through innovative workshops designed to enhance knowledge of Emirati culture and Dubai’s and the UAE’s history, reinforcing national identity.
Throughout the winter camp, children will embark on an immersive journey following in the footsteps of their ancestors. They will stop at various stations to learn how ships sail and how winds and currents affect them at sea. They will also discover ancient diving techniques, traditional pearl diving methods that have been a source of livelihood for Dubai residents for centuries, and practice oyster opening and ‘Khabt’ making.
During their maritime journey, the participants will engage in the art of Nahma, learn about the challenges faced by sailors during diving trips, and understand their methods for maintaining health at sea. On the last day of the camp, they will have the opportunity to visit Al Shindagha Museum houses to learn about Emirati customs and traditions and enjoy a collection of rich seafaring stories, further strengthening their connection to Emirati heritage.
Abdalla Al Obeidli, Acting Manager of Al Shindagha Museum, affirmed that winter camps provide an inspiring environment capable of enhancing children’s connection to local heritage, imparting knowledge of marine environments and their diverse details, stating: “The sea is an important part of Emirati heritage, contributing to the social and economic life of Dubai, with historical trades such as pearl trading, traditional shipbuilding, fishing, and diving equipment shaping the culture. Dubai Culture is committed to preserving both tangible and intangible local heritage by providing practical experience and diverse knowledge to the younger generation, empowering them, and developing their talents, all within the framework of the cultural responsibility that forms a key pillar of the sectoral priorities within the Authority’s strategic roadmap.”
All camp activities are presented in Arabic and English, taking place in a safe environment under the supervision of experts and specialists in maritime heritage. This reflects Dubai Culture’s commitment to providing an innovative educational environment aimed at training children to adopt positive thinking as a fundamental value in society, developing their life skills, and nurturing their creative abilities.
